September Message from Our CEO

We are coming up upon the beginning of fall, and the last season of transition before the year ends. For many of us, bidding farewell to summer also coincides with preparing for and adjusting to a new school year. My daughters are heading into 4th and 8th grade, and we have marked these new chapters in their journeys with excitement and gratitude. Whether you’re navigating the excitement of a new school year or the challenges it may bring, know that NAMI WLA is here to support you.

August was our month of wellness and now is a good time for a gentle reminder to be intentional about creating space for physical and mental wellness all year round. We often remind one another that self-care is not selfish. When we take care of ourselves, we are better equipped to provide care for others. This is a principle we can carry with us into the busy months ahead.

I was reminded of this after a particularly busy week of juggling life and work responsibilities. Our NAMI WLA team recently attended the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training Conference in Indiana. The conference was an enriching experience, offering us new insights and strategies to bring back to our community. The training we received will enhance our ability to assist individuals in crisis and work collaboratively with law enforcement and mental health professionals. It was also powerful to see so many people committed to better outcomes to crises.

September is also Suicide Prevention Month, a critical time to raise awareness and provide resources to our community. I’m pleased to share that Didi Hirsch representatives will be our guests for the Janis Black Warner Speaker Series this month, as they share information on suicide prevention, including important updates about the 988 crisis hotline. This presentation is an invaluable opportunity for us to learn how we can better support those who may be struggling. Suicide Prevention Month provides a dedicated time to raise our voices around this difficult topic. Just one conversation can change a life. I hope you will join us in committing to having one conversation this month and to share our resources with anyone you know who may be struggling.

As we embark on this season of change, I encourage you to explore the resources we have available, whether for back-to-school transitions or mental health support. Together, we can create a stronger, more resilient community.
